Migrant workers' wages increased 13.9 percent in 2013: report


This survey released on May 12 covers the rural regions of China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Data included in the census was collected from a total 8,930 villages and 235,000 rural workers hailing from 1,527 counties and districts. The survey is conducted quarterly and includes door-to-door interviews.



   




     

Terminology

Migrant workers: The status of migrant workers is based in the household registration system, or hukou. The term mainly refers to rural residents that migrate to urban areas to pursue work in non-agricultural sectors for periods longer than six months. It is also used to define those working in places outside the place of residence indicated in their hukou.

Local migrant workers: Those who work in an area sharing the same jurisdiction as their legal place of residence.

Outside migrant workers: Those who work outside the jurisdiction of their legal place of residence.

New-generation migrant worker: A migrant worker born in or after 1980.

Old-generation migrant worker: A migrant worker born before 1980.

Migrant workers with families: Workers that leave their registered place of residence with their families for employment.

Eastern region: A total 11 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing Municipality, Tianjin Municipality, Hebei Province, Liaoning Province, Shanghai Municipality, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Fujian Province, Shandong Province, Guangdong Province and Hainan Province. 

Central region: A total eight provinces, including Shanxi Province, Jilin Province, Heilongjiang Province, Anhui Province, Jiangxi Province, Henan Province, Hubei Province and Hunan Province.

Western region: A total 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, including the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Chongqing Municipality, Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province, Yunnan Province, the Tibet Autonomous Region, Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, Qinghai Province, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
