Yet another quality of life report, the China City Life Quality Index Report has ranked the livability of Chinese cities. The report ranked Beijing in eighth place. The top three cities are Guangzhou, Shanghai and Nanjing. The index includes things like salary, living environment, and inflation. Is Beijing ranked correctly? What do people think of the quality of life here? Which standards should be included in the index? We sent Lin Yigu to find out.
Lula, teacher, Thailand
Beijing is the only city that I have been to in China. I think this city is great. Well, I think Beijing shows foreigners like me the beauty of traditional China and modern China as well. The quality of the locals should be emphasized in these reports.
Paul Westcott, lawyer, Singapore
I think Beijing doesn't deserve this ranking, some small cities deserves a better place in this list. Shanghai should be No 1. Beijing is so dusty and some areas are too dirty. It doesn't deserve to be a high-standard international city. Quality? For some, it's good in Beijing. But generally, life quality in Beijing is not very high. The air you breathe, the water you drink, hospital facilities, trains and buses that you take.
Matt Shaw, doctor, Canada
I like Beijing much better than Shanghai. I think Beijing should rank at least higher than Shanghai. In some aspects, Beijing is not as good as Shanghai. Life in Shanghai is delicate, very much like in Japan. Politeness should be included into the index. The transportation in Beijing drives me crazy every day.
Alex Zimmermann, costume designer, Austria
For me, the way some Beijing locals dress themselves makes me throw up. I can't understand how they can dress like that! I think clothes are important for everyone. See how people dress in Paris and New York, and you can understand what I am talking about. So maybe Beijing ranks low in this report because of bad taste in fashion.
Jacob, singer, Nigeria
I think Beijing should be ranked higher. I like Beijing and I think it's a city of great fun. I think the quality of nightlife, culture, food safety, the politeness of the locals, the air, water, and public transportation should be included.
Nicholas Conway, architect, Australia
I really hate the public transportation. It's impossible for you to get in the metro during the rush hour. Compared to big cities like Sydney or San Francisco, Beijing is not up there. Air quality, water supply, rainfall, sports facilities in the neighborhood, hygiene or cleanliness should be included. Oh, the number of snack stores should be included in the index. You can't be a happy city without fantastic, cheap food.
Felipe Lopes, student, Spain
I just don't see how Shanghai is second and Beijing eighth. I think Beijing is so much more liveable! I lived in Shanghai for a few months and it was total chaos. I think environment should be on top of the variables rather than salary. I think Beijing is greener than Shanghai? Maybe I'm wrong?
