Should subway ticket prices rise at rush hour?

Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport have signaled that they may use price adjustment to help regulate the flow of passengers during peak time. Prices would increase during the rush hours, and be cheaper off-peak. What do people think of this new proposal? Do they think it will make subway lines less crowded? We sent Huang Chenchen to find out.

Diogo Nascimento, Portugal, student

I don't agree with this policy. People need to get to work at that precise time. Getting to work and getting trapped in the subway is their living condition. Neither should they change the price nor will it be effective.

Eric Turpin, France, teacher

I go to work and home every day by subway. I think it's a good idea to change the price during the peak time. Because it's new so it should be tried. Maybe, one month's time should be given for a trial [first].

Graeme Kerr, UK, chemical manufacturing

It's the most stupid thing I've ever heard. The whole problem is the roads. If you increase the prices, the people will have to start either looking at cars or other options. They should lower the price of the subway and put more carriages on it to make it bigger, so we will be against the cars on the road. You could argue that people can always take buses, but it's [often] impossible to understand where they're going and it takes time. And they're even more crowded than the subway. On the subway at least you can get off, but once on the bus, you are at the far end and there is only one door, it's impossible to get off.

Yui Kimura, US, salesperson

I think it's a bad idea. I think companies should offer flexi-time. Transportation shouldn't change the price, but the companies should change the time to commute. Why should I suffer to pay extra money?

Tejas Shah, India, chief executive

For me, it's OK. We don't use the subway too often because my workplace is near. But on weekends, my kids like to travel by subway. The cost is so far so low and I think we could increase an amount. But if they limit the crowd, what will happen to the poor people? That's the most difficult; poor people might find their only means of transportation unaffordable - therefore, we shouldn't increase the price.

Kim Yaung-il, South Korea, student

We don't think that's practical. The time to go for work and go to school has been determined. Even in Korea, where the subway is crowded the same, we don't have such regulations.

Sheryl Rose Agustin, Philippines, au pair

The subway is indeed crowded but charging a higher price isn't fair. It's already too expensive. It's better to take a public bus than the subway if that's the case. The subway is more crowded than the bus I think.

Alex Turner, UK, teacher

It's a brilliant idea. People will find taking the subway more expensive and they'd better take the bus instead. But the real issue is the cost. The subway should open more lines.
