Taylor Momsen on stage

Taylor Momsen’s rock band The Pretty Reckless is set to play Beijing’s Intercity Music Festival on Monday, followed by a China tour which includes Shanghai and Shenzhen.

If the name doesn’t ring an immediate bell, you’re probably not much of a fan of programs such as The Hills or Sex and the City. Although Momsen has always considered music the biggest part of her life, the singer is still better known as Jenny Humphrey from the popular US television series Gossip Girl.

“It has been the thing that’s kept me sane,” the 18-year-old told the Global Times of her music. “I couldn’t live without it.”

She recorded her first ever song at the age of five and started to perform as The Pretty Reckless two years ago; the band’s debut album, Light Me Up, was released in the UK in August last year.

“We have never been to China and we are really excited to play there for the first time,” she said. “You can expect a loud rock show.”

Momsen writes all the songs, as well as singing and playing guitar in the band, and has been passionate about music as long as she can remember. Perhaps it was this that partly promoted her to tell Russian edition of Elle last month that she was quitting acting forever to focus on her music.

“I [already] quit acting, actually. I quit Gossip Girl and now tour and am in a band and that’s pretty much all I want to do. Hopefully I’ll be able to only do that for the rest of my life,” she told the magazine.

The fifth season of Gossip Girl has confirmed the absence of Momsen.

Compared with the ultra-girlie series, The Pretty Reckless is not a household name at all,  so who can be sure that the TV ingenue might not change her mind and give up her struggling music career for the glamor of Hollywood later on?

“I think it’s a challenge for any new band to get their music heard. Our plan is just to tour, play and do what we do, and hopefully people will come,” she told the Global Times. “At the moment I’m really focused on music, but who knows what the future may hold? Whether or not I do go back to acting, I know that I will be writing songs and playing music for the rest of my life.”

From acting at the age of three, and with a modeling career as well, Momsen is a hardworking person who is happy to call herself a workaholic.

“My childhood was just that: working and creating,” she said.

And who would the The Pretty Reckless wish to be like in five years?

“There are a lot of amazing bands that we love; as for now, I think we are just trying to do our own thing.”

After the Beijing festival, The Pretty Reckless will perform at Dian Livehouse, Hangzhou, on the 14th, Mao Livehouse, Shanghai, on the 15th, Xi Wo Livehouse, Guangzhou, on the 17th and Evening Show, Shenzhen on the 18th September.
