Australian children are still spending almost half of their spare time watching TV, on the Internet or playing video games, according to a survey by Cartoon Network released on Tuesday.

The Cartoon Network's annual New Generations Poll has found Australian kids spend around 2.4 hours of their day watching television.

The figure remains largely unchanged from last year, a spokesman for Cartoon Network said.

The survey of 1600 children and 1600 parents also found children are spending 15 percent less time in the outdoor sports activities, compared to the figure in 2010.

The survey found Australian children are spending more time indoors reading books and doing homework (up 16 percent) or playing with toys (up 27 percent).

Cartoon Network researcher Peter Hammer said the figures reflected the changing nature of households as newer technologies infiltrate the average home.

"Aussie kids are tech savvy and show strong media awareness," he said.

"And in technological tradition, TV remains the ultimate king of the screen."

Eighty-three percent of respondents aged between four and 14 said they used the Internet every week, spending 38 percent of the time playing online games and 20 percent of the time doing homework.
