A sighting of a rare Siberian tiger in Heilongjiang Province has excited animal lovers across the country.

On October 19, the Heilongjiang Wildlife Research Institute announced that an adult male wild tiger had been briefly spotted by locals in the vicinity of a reservoir in Mishan, Heilongjiang Province two days earlier.

After the sighting, researcher Lu Xiangdong said that tiger's pawprints had been found on the bank of the reservoir, from which they were able to deduce the tiger's age.

There are only about 500 wild Siberian tigers worldwide, with about 20 spread across Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces.
