Drunken dealings
A minor spat has become a major controversy after a poor man in Taikang, Henan Province was beaten severely after refusing to down a shot of rice wine at a banquet with a local official. Li Junfeng, the aforementioned victim, was invited by his friend Yu Junwei to dinner one night over this past Spring Festival period. Unbeknownst to Li, two local bigwigs, Xuan Guozheng, a property developer, and Chen Zhongxiang, the vice-head of the land and resource bureau, were also planning to come along and join the festivities. Having ingratiated himself with the relatively powerful men, Li's mirth soon turned to drunken despair when his refusal to continue downing alcohol so angered Chen and his posse that they beat him to a pulp. Though Chen later denied this accusation, claiming that Li's injury was the result of a fall, a forensic investigation confirmed that Li had indeed been the victim of a beating for his reticence.
