The share price of Aier Eye Hospital Group declined 4 percent in yesterday's morning trading on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange after a famous eye doctor in Taiwan said he would not do LASIK laser eye surgery in future because of its potential risk to patients.
Hunan-based Aier Eye Hospital closed at 22.74 yuan ($3.62) yesterday, down 2.49 percent.
Cai Ruifang, a famous eye doctor at Taibei Medical University, said he would not conduct the LASIK surgery in the future because some patients got some symptoms after they underwent the surgery more than 10 years ago, according to a report by zaobao.com yesterday.
However, the local authorities said yesterday the surgery would not be prohibited, according to news portal caijing.com yesterday.
"I had the LASIK laser eye surgery 12 years ago, and I haven't felt uncomfortable until now," said Wang Jun, a 30-year-old worker at a technology company in Shenzhen.
Nearly 2 million people have the surgery every year in China on average, said Zhang Jian, an eye doctor at the first affiliated hospital of Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The laser eye surgery contributed 281 million yuan to the company's revenues in 2010, accounting for 43.9 percent of the total, according to the company's annual report.
