Doctors in Wuhan, Hubei Province removed two matchsticks from the vagina of an 8-year-old girl recently.
The girl's mother, surnamed Liang, had discovered a secretion on her daughter's underpants and subsequently found a matchstick had been placed inside the girl's vagina.
At the hospital, doctors removed the objects, which the girl admitted she'd placed there "out of curiosity."
The hospital later told reporters that they regularly receive cases of children who insert things into their sexual organs, though most of the cases involve boys instead of girls.
"Many children like to play with their sexual organs, even though they don't quite understand what they're doing," said Wang Jun, the doctor in charge of the girl's case.
"As sexual awareness begins to develop, it is difficult for children to ascertain the difference between harmful and pleasurable activities."
