Netflix Inc., the leading Internet video streaming service provider, on Tuesday announced a deal with The Weinstein Company that will make the studio's movies exclusively available for Netflix subscribers in the United States.
Under the new multi-year licensing agreement, "The Artist", the film with ten of this year's Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, will make its US paid television debut exclusively on Netflix rather than on traditional premium cable.
Also making its pay TV premiere on Netflix is "Undefeated," which is nominated for a 2012 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, will bring certain other films from the Weinstein exclusively to Netflix within one year of their theatrical release, including the French-language World War II drama "Sarah's Key."
Netflix now has over 23 million subscribers in the U.S. and other countries. For about eight U.S. dollars a month, the subscribers can instantly watch films and TV episodes streamed over the Internet to their computers, TVs and other devices.
