Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday that he will undergo a new round of surgery as part of ongoing cancer treatment after his Cuban doctors detected a lesion in the pelvic region where Chavez had a cancerous tumor removed last year.

Chavez said he decided to reveal the results of his trip to Cuba on Saturday after rumors spread in the local media, adding he was confident the lesion would not be complicated.

"It is a small lesion of about 2 centimeters that should be removed in a surgery that supposedly will be less complicated than before," he told the official Venezolana de Television (VTV) channel during a live broadcast in the western state of Barinas where Chavez was reviewing the construction progress of the Santa Ines industrial complex.

He did not reveal when the new surgery will take place, saying "Nobody has to be alarmed. I am in a good physical condition for this new battle."

The 57-year-old Chavez, who is seeking to be re-elected for a 3rd term in the October presidential elections, has remained upbeat about his prospects of beating the cancer. He was first operated on in Cuba in June last year and later went through several rounds of chemo-therapy.
