Confirming speculations, Gremio announced the hiring of head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo on Tuesday.

The move came two days after the dismissal of Caio Junior who quickly fell out of the grace of fans after only eight games in command.

Luxemburgo is expected to arrive in the city of Porto Alegre on Wednesday to observe his new team play its arch-rivals Internacional in the first round of playoffs in the first half of the Rio Grande do Sul state championship.

Interim head coach Roger Machado will lead Gremio into the quarterfinals against Internacional.

The coach will be taking a large pay cut compared to what he formerly received with Flamengo, earning roughly 60 percent less with a salary of 260,000 US dollars per-month.

Luxemburgo will receive his official presentation to the media and fans on February 23.
