Two high-speed trains from Beijing to Shanghai were suspended due to heavy fog yesterday morning, according to the city's railway administration.
Passengers affected could either change to another train or have a full reimbursement, said the administration, who apologized in a statement on their official Sina microblog yesterday.
"Some Beijing-Shanghai high speed trains are late due to the heavy fog in Tianjin and parts of Hebei Province, and G119 and G121 are suspended," said the statement, "The railway administration is trying to restore order and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused."
No passengers were stranded, said a publicity director with the South Railway Station.
"Many of them changed to other trains and those who were unwilling to take other trains had a full reimbursement, without any commission charged," said the director, surnamed Cai.
However, some passengers on the trains said they were told there was a technical problem.
"An announcement on the train said it's because the contact network had a malfunction," said a passenger surnamed Xu, who was on a train from Beijing to Jinan, Shandong Province, which was halted at Tianjin.
Other residents posted their doubts online, wondering why trains were affected by fog.
"This is a technical question we can't answer," said a media employee with the municipal railway administration, who insisted on anonymity.
"The railway is rarely affected by the weather, but it will depend on how bad the weather and visibility was," he said.
