A group of 35 bookstores in Shanghai received a total of 5 million yuan ($792,600) in government subsidies Monday, on World Book and Copyright Day, said local officials.

Twenty-five of the stores are privately owned, while eight are State owned; they were given the subsidies to better compete against online book stores.
