In a sign that the two governments are trying to defuse tension, the two nations' foreign ministries exchanged statements encouraging cooperation in the past two days.
Japanese Foreign Minister, Seiji Maehara, said Friday that, as the world's second- and third-largest economies, Japan and China should work together to continue pushing forward the two countries' strategic links.
In response, China's foreign ministry spokesman, Ma Zhaoxu, said in a statement posted on the ministry's website Saturday, "We expect Japan to work with us in joint efforts to maintain and advance the mutually beneficial, strategic bilateral relations."
