Man held for deadly rumor

A man was detained Thursday for allegedly spreading a rumor that sparked the mass brawl at a toy factory in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, in which two people were killed, police said yesterday.

The man, surnamed Zhu, is alleged to have posted a message on a website on June 16 that said “six Uygur men raped two girls” at the Early Light Internatioanl (Holding) Ltd.

The post was widely read and quickly spread to several other websites, a spokesperson for the Shaoguan government said.

Zhu admitted to posting the rumor to “let out his discontentment” after being refused a job at the factory.

There was no evidence of anyone having been raped, the Xinhua News Agency quoted the local public security bureau as saying.
