'Republic' is tops

The movie The Founding of a Republic has become the top box office earner among domestically produced films. The movie raked in 406 million yuan ($58.4 million) since its premiere on September 16.

Weng Li, spokesman with the State-owned China Film Group Corporation, said they initially expected box office sales to hit 200 million yuan.

The movie recounts the establishment of modern China from 1945 to 1949.

It was made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
