Mother Chen Yurong, 55, successfully donated part of her liver to her son Ye Haibin on November 3. The operation lasted 14 hours.

Ye, who was diagnosed with congenital hepatolenticular degeneration where copper accumulates in the liver, red blood cells and brain, was critically ill on December 24 last year. He needed a liver transplant to survive. His mother's liver matched, but she wasn't healthy. So for her son's life, in February she started dieting and hiking 10 kilometers everyday to make her liver more suitable for a liver transplant. Seven months later, Chen's liver met the standard for donation. After 14 hours' surgery, she gave part of her liver to her son.

The next four days are critical, as both patients could encounter such risks as profuse bleeding, liver failure, rejection and infection.
