"This could be a case of apprehension on the part of ISPs that somehow gay-related websites could be classified as pornography," said Ryan Dutcher, co-founder and communications director of Gayographic, an online resource and directory for the gay community, and organizer of Mr Gay China 2010.

"However, from what we can see, the government is taking a more open approach to gay issues in China and interfering less in the gay community. The differences between a few years ago and now are like night and day," Dutcher added

"My first thought was that homosexuals' living space network is compressed. A large number of gay websites have been shut down, so they have lost their homes online," webmaster of mifufu.com, whose site has not yet been deleted, told the Global Times. "Gay websites with anti-AIDS information play an important role, so closing the sites will be bad for health education."
