The Global Times held a reception at the Four Seasons Hotel in Shanghai Monday to celebrate the launch of its Metro Shanghai supplement as well as its website.

Mi Bohua, deputy editor in chief of the People's Daily, said in his opening speech that he hopes Metro Shanghai will follow the pattern to "improve the integration, communication and cooperation between China and the rest of world."

Yang Zhenwu, publicity chief of the CPC Shanghai municipal committee, also expressed his wish that Metro Shanghai will witness the development of Shanghai and become a part of the city, a new face in the local media.

Hu Xijin, the editor in chief of the Global Times, said in his welcome speech that the launch of Metro Shanghai is the latest pioneering work the Global Times has ever done in Shanghai.

"There are a great many expats living in Shanghai, and they are eager to read in-depth reports and human-interest stories about the city they inhabit. In addition to satisfying readers' desire for local news, the launch of the Global Times Metro Shanghai will make it easier for foreigners to facilitate communication between Shanghai, China and the world," said Hu.

Henning Hansen, vice-consul of the German Consulate General in Shanghai said in his speech that the launch of Metro Shanghai was "a welcome and promising answer" to the call for a reliable and trustworthy information platform.

"I certainly enjoyed reading the paper this morning and look forward to picking up another copy at the newsstand tomorrow," said Hansen.

Nearly 200 foreign diplomats, representatives from international media organizations, Chinese scholars and renowned figures attended the event. Five delivered speeches.

Cao Deming, headmaster of the Shanghai International Studies University praised the successful launch of the Global Times, adding that, "Metro Shanghai's debut sets a good beginning for future reporters."

Published under the People's Daily, the Global Times (Chinese edition) was established in 1993. For the past 17 years, it has dedicated itself to the fostering of greater communication between China and the world. It has also been recognized as a commercial success by the media industry.

Metro Shanghai serves as a 16-page supplement to the Global Times English national edition, launched on April 20, 2009, and is published in Shanghai from Monday to Friday. These pages are devoted to reporting on the everyday lives of Shanghai residents in addition to happenings in the expat community, providing useful information about all aspects of daily life including entertainment, food, shopping, services and the local community.
