Mental health gets a boost

However, some patients were turned away from health facilities due to inadequate hospital beds.

According to China's CDC, there were only 572 psychiatric medical institutions, 132,881 hospital beds and 16,383 registered psychiatrists in China by 2005. Based on those statistics, there is 1.04 hospital bed for every 10,000 people and just one psychiatrist for every 100,000 people.

"To be frank, beds are limited at all hospitals, so some patients couldn't receive treatment. Furthermore, the medi-cal fees are an astronomical sum for some families," Bian said.
