Malaria med scare

One child died and 98 adult villagers were hospitalized after taking a medicine to treat malaria in Southwest China's Sichuan Province Monday, local authorities said Wednesday.

Lu Dajiang of Shashi village in Neijiang was diagnosed with falciparum malaria on May 11, the provincial Health Department said.

A total of 143 people in nearby Mawan village, who were in close contact with Lu, took a medicine, which was not yet identified, on Monday afternoon, the department said.

The medicine was from the local health authority.

Soon after, they complained of exhaustion and nausea.

Meng Yushan, who complained of a headache after taking the medicine, died at around 8 pm Monday.
