Angie Wang (not her real name), 25, who is half Chinese and half white, left Canada two years ago after she finished her college studies and headed for China to pursue her dreams. As a part-time model in Shanghai, she decided to use her body for another type of work: surrogate motherhood.
Through her Shanghai-based surrogate agent surnamed Yu, Wang said that being a surrogate mother is nothing to be embarrassed about.
Surrogacy technology is prohibited by law in China, but still, many women like Angie are willing to carry a stranger's baby for 10 months and for people who cannot have their own child for a variety of reasons. At the same time, some partners want a mixed-race baby and Wang is the perfect choice for many.
"Angie is our only surrogate mother who caters to clients who want a baby of mixed blood," Yu told the Global Times. It's not clear how many babies Angie has given birth to since she entered the business.
A well-qualified Chinese surrogate mother who is young and well educated can demand up to 100,000 yuan ($14,757).
To hire Angie's body the client needs to pay 120,000 yuan ($17,709) to her and an extra 50,000 yuan ($7,378) for her egg, plus an agent fees of 30,000 yuan. The agent normally charges 15,000 yuan ($2,213) for a Chinese surrogate mother.
Chinese people paying huge sums to have a half-white baby became a subject of contro-versy in Taiwan.
A businessman surnamed Shao and one of his employees surnamed Guo, a man, hired four Uzbekistan women to help them get a test-tube baby starting in 2006. The women gave birth to five test tube babies that were of mixed blood.
Taiwan prosecutors charged Shao and Guo with violating the island's Human Reproduc-tion Law and with forging legal documents, China News Service reported earlier.
What's more striking is that Shao and Guo are suspected of being gay partners because they live in the same building and police found several pictures of a naked Guo molest-ing several foreign boys. The two said they wanted to have a European-looking baby.
