Nuclear energy experts have urged authorities to improve crisis management mechanisms for emergency nuclear incidents while saying it is unlikely China will suffer from the chaos currently happening in Japan.

The experts made the call after Japan's radiation leak crisis, triggered by a massive earthquake Friday, led to fears over how authorities would be able to protect citizens in the event of an emergency.

The Guangdong-based Nanfang Daily reported Tuesday that Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province, will build another 27 nuclear harbors in the next nine years to strengthen its ability to handle an emergency.

The newspaper reported that the current number of shelters in Shenzhen, which is adjacent to the Daya Bay Nuclear Station, is insufficient.

The move would see the total number of nuclear shelters in Shenzhen increase to 70 by 2020 from the current 43. Those shelters would consist mostly of current campuses or public sports facilities in six different districts, which can accommodate 57,000 people.
