Flu sufferers get fit on two wheels

The outbreak of the A (H1N1) flu virus has been a boon for the bicycle business, a Beijing retailer told the Global Times yesterday.

Jian Baoyi, manager of the Baodao store in Xicheng district, said he had seen an increase in sales, as people turned to bicycles as a form of exercise, rather than going to a busy, potentially germ-filled health clubs.

“I rarely go to the gym now,” 29-year-old office worker An Lidong told the Global Times.

“I get a bit paranoid when people cough next to me,” he said.

Jian said, “We made good profits in both May and June due to the flu.”

The store sells more than 10 bikes a week, with the most expensive sports models costing more than 10,000 yuan ($1,500).

There has been little change in sales figures with the advent of a better public transport system, Jian said.

“I often use my bike to get to work,” An said.
