China's Olympic short track speed skating champion Wang Meng has started a business after retiring from the sport, aiming to make it more popular among the Chinese.

At the World Winter Sports Expo in Beijing, the four-time Olympic gold medalist said she expects to spearhead a entertainment-oriented short track race rather than traditional time races at her company, Wang Meng Sports, to increase the popularity of short track speed skating.

"It's an event which focuses on entertainment rather than competition," Wang said. "But I'm not going to make it an exhibition tournament but a sport-themed reality show."

After Beijing won the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, winter sports in China received a huge boost.

Wang, who suffered a major ankle injury which cost her chance to compete at the Sochi Winter Olympics, has never worn the blades since 2014.

But she put on her blades at the Expo to skate on an artificial rink at the exhibition area.

"This is the first time I have worn the blades after my 2014 injury," Wang said. "I didn't expect to return to competition, but wearing them makes it possible."

But she opted to start her own short track race rather than the traditional one.

"If I am going to return, I will be on this event," Wang said.
