The United Nations (UN)-mediated talks on the reunification of Cyprus resumed Sunday morning in a resort hotel in Switzerland's Mont Pelerin.

The Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades are present in this new round of peace negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations.

A UN source said that the talks are hoped to pave the way toward reunification of the island, which has been divided in two since 1974 after a Greece-inspired coup spurred Turkey to send forces and occupied the northern part of Cyprus.

The source added that both Anastasiades and Akinci are set to discuss long-standing territorial issues as well as other outstanding matters in the presence of UN Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide.

Sunday morning's meeting is the second time the two leaders conducted direct talks relating to territorial matters. The two have been engaged in sustained peace negotiations in Switzerland's Mont Pelerin earlier from Nov. 7 to Nov.11.
