An explosion jolted a police station in Vietnam's central highlands Dak Lak province that left three dead "was an accident, not a terror attack," Bui Trong Tuan, chief of general staff of the provincial police said Tuesday.

Tuan made the remark at a press meeting held on Tuesday morning in Dak Lak, some 960 km south of capital Hanoi.

Accordingly, the explosion at the police station's chemical storage on Monday evening killed three police officers and injured three others.

Tran Ky Roi, director of the Dak Lak police department, told the media that the explosion occurred at around 20:40 local time (1340 GMT) on Monday.

"We're investigating the cause of the explosion," Roi said.

According to witnesses, there had been a loud explosion that had lasted for around 10 seconds and could be heard as far as half a kilometer away. Other people living near the police station said that they felt their houses shake and smelt gas and explosives, reported local Dan Tri (People's Knowledge) online newspaper on Tuesday.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has sent a condolence message to the families of the victims and urged local authorities to promptly clarify the incident.
