Shanghai to ban smoking in all indoor venues

Shanghai will ban smoking in all indoor venues starting from March, reported eastday.com.

District health promotion committees started a two-week campaign Wednesday to increase public awareness of the latest regulation on smoking control. Officers will organize theme activities in designated areas and patrol venues.

Citizens are also invited to voluntarily stop anyone they see smoking in indoor venues and also call a hot line to report them. Shanghai's smoking control department will also carry out large-scale crackdowns on indoor smoking.

The new amendment closes loopholes in local smoking control regulations that went into effect seven years ago that still allow smoking in designated indoor areas such as hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, airports and port stations.

The latest version will also prohibit smoking in certain public outdoor venues, including after-school education centers and children's hospitals.
