Czech, German and Israeli embassies in Beijing hold Holocaust Memorial event

In honor of the International Holocaust Memorial Day, which was established by the UN in 2005, the Czech, German and Israeli embassies in Beijing jointly held a Holocaust memorial event at the Embassy of the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Author Peter Finkelgruen made a lecture during the event on his family's experience when escaping Nazi's persecution. He was born in Shanghai in 1942 after his parents fled from their native Czechoslovakia.

Finkelgruen's grandfather was beaten to death by Nazi guard Anton Malloth in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in German-occupied Czechoslovakia.

He documented his endeavor to indict Malloth - who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2001 after escaping justice for 55 years - through his autobiographical books House of Germany. The tale of an unatoned murder and Erlkoenig's empire. The tale of a deception.

The three embassies will make a joint effort in China to further the historical remembrance of the Holocaust and underline the importance of accepting historical responsibility, reconciliation and trust among the people and states.

During the World War II, China's Shanghai had harbored some 20,000 Jews who were seeking refuge from Nazi persecution.

At the beginning of 2017, a Chinese TV series The Last Visa, which depicts Chinese diplomats in Vienna issuing visas to the Jew refugees in 1939, was broadcast through major TV stations.

The International Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27) commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people killed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The date marks the anniversary of the January 27, 1945, when Soviet Red Army liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp.

It is the first time that the three embassies commemorate the Holocaust together in China.
