The Mask of The Black Death, based on a screenplay from late Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, will be produced by Chinese film studios Huayi Brothers and CKF Pictures and hit the big screen in 2020, the studios announced at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Kurosawa started writing the screenplay for the film after his 1975 film Dersu Uzala. The story takes place in Russia during a time when humanity is threatened by a deadly disease and sees the country's prince hide behind the safety of the palace walls, ignoring the suffering of his people.

The project, which was originally planned to be filmed in 1998, was put on hold when Kurosawa was confined to a wheelchair after a stroke.

"Mask is one of Kurosawa's films that never made it to the big screen. So we thought, 'why don't we make the film for him?'" Chen Kuo-fu, director, producer and founder of CKF Pictures, said at the press conference.

The two studios also announced that they are cooperating to produce four other works as part of their "Imagination Industry" movie project, including a sequel to the well-known Detective D franchise and a prequel in the Painted Skin franchise.
