China's two annual national legislative sessions kicked off last Friday. Among the attendees of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People's Congress (NPC), the female representatives in particular drew a lot of attention, given the proximity of International Women's Day on Wednesday.

China has a national policy encouraging women to participate in politics and discuss policies. Local governments have been told to pay particular attention to promoting female policymakers and civil servants, and encourage them to bring up important issues.

Every year, female representatives at the two sessions help address issues facing the country by giving their unique point of view. For example, this year, there will be discussions about protecting girls from sexual harassment, ensuring rural women get equal access to education and providing mothers with adequate childcare resources.
