Cambodian king grants honorary title of "Samdech" to deputy PM Sok An

Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on Monday bestowed the royal honorary title of "Samdech" on Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Sok An for his devotion to the nation and the throne.

According to a royal decree, Sok An, 67, was granted the title of "Samdech Vibol Panha."

Sihamoni said in the royal decree that Sok An "is a leader who has helped lead Cambodia in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia in 1993, contributing to building national peace, unification, economy, and development in all fields."

The deputy prime minister has also contributed to protecting democracy, stability, national independence and territorial integrity under the wise leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the monarch said.

Besides royal family members and Buddhist monk leaders, there are now seven political figures who have been awarded the title of "Samdech."

They are Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife Bun Rany, Senate President Say Chhum, National Assembly President Heng Samrin, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng, and Royal Palace Minister Kong Sam Ol.
