Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held a joint press conference after their meeting in Beijing on Saturday afternoon.
Wang called the meeting "honest and pragmatic," as well as productive for both sides.
"The phone call between the two countries' leaders has served as guidance for both sides," said Wang, adding that his meeting with Tillerson laid the groundwork for the upcoming summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping
and US President Donald Trump
Tillerson said at the conference that the Korean Peninsula situation has reached a "rather dangerous level," and China and the US will work together to convince Pyongyang to move away from nuclear weapons, news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported.
Wang urged the US to remain "cool-headed" over North Korea.
However, there was no mention of any agreement on the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD
) issue, something that China has strongly opposed in the past.
Wang told reporters it is normal for China and the US to have their differences, and that open communication is essential.
"It's the right time for the US Secretary of State to visit China. There has been a lot of nervousness in China after a few comments from President Trump about Taiwan, free trade and putting taxes on Chinese products," Frank-Jürgen Richter, founder and chairman of Horasis, a Switzerland-based think, tank told the Global Times on the sidelines of the China Development Forum in Beijing on Saturday.
"I believe once people meet, things can be solved," Richter continued. "Tillerson's main task is to prepare for President Xi's upcoming visit to Florida. The Chinese can do quite well. If President Xi and Trump find a kind of chemistry and Trump understands how important China is and President Xi is, he might give up his shortsightedness, anti-globalization and anti-China rhetoric."
"China and the US are very important. They cannot be divided. Tillerson's visit is a key step toward reconciliation," he added.
