Fishermen in Shanghai found a dead whale at the junction of the Yangtze River Estuary and Hangzhou Bay on Monday, according to the news portal xinmin.cn.

The fisherman came upon the body while working and immediately reported it to police, who asked them to drag the body to a pier.

The whale is longer than 20 meters and weighs approximately 20 tons.

Its body had already started decomposing, and its fins appeared to have been cut off and its head was also missing.

Police are investigating the cause of death and the origin of the whale.

This is the third and the largest whale ever found near Shanghai. In the 1970s, a whale carcass was found in the Luchaogang, in today's Pudong New Area.

In 2002 a small whale became stranded in Dishuihu Lake but returned to the sea with help of local authorities.
