The carcass of a 20-meter-long whale was discovered floating in a Shanghai harbor, which authorities say bears evidence a fin had been sawed off.

A crew of fisherman first spotted the decomposing whale on Monday near Hangzhou Bay and the Yangtze River delta.

"We were near fishing when we see this huge thing floating over at us," said one of the crew, surnamed Lu, who said he noticed he noticed the left fin was missing.

"I've never seen anything like it in my decades of fishing."

Lu notified police, who had the crew tow the estimated 20-ton whale into Luchao Harbor.

Upon closer inspection, authorities said the whale had been dead for about 10 days.

Markings on the body suggested its left fin had been removed with a saw.

Marine wildlife authorities are still investigating the cause of death, said local police.

This is the first whale to be discovered in Luchao Harbor in more than a decade.
