Tsinghua gets that sinking feeling

New students at the highly-competitive Tsinghua University will now literally have to keep their heads above water in order to graduate.

Officials recently announced the decision to reinstate a required swim test that had been policy when Tsinghua opened in 1915.

"Students unable to swim could neither graduate nor study abroad," Liu Bo, director of Tsinghua's physical education department, said at a recent faculty assembly.

"The policy was ended due to an increase in enrollment and lack of facilities," Liu said.

The reason for reviving the rule, Liu explained, is to prepare students with "essential survival skills" and improve their overall physical health.

Exceptions will be made depending on individual cases, Liu added.

In order to prepare for the exam, students will be offered short-term swim courses at Tsinghua over their summer vacations.

The university will not hold freshmen classes between 3:55 and 7:20 pm so that students will have more time for sport, Liu added.
