Russian President Vladimir Putin extended congratulations on Sunday to Orthodox Christians and all Russian citizens on Easter.

"With deep satisfaction I would like to highlight the creative, truly selfless work of the Russian Orthodox Church, and representatives of other Christian confessions," the president said in a congratulatory message published by the Kremlin.

The president commended those who "strive to solve important social problems, consolidate family institution and harmonize inter-religious and inter-ethnic relations," adding that "their role in preserving our richest historical, cultural heritage is immeasurable."

Putin attended the night Easter service at Cathedral of Christ the Savior, with Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church leading the service, the Kremlin said.

As one of the most important holidays to Christians across the world, Easter is also the biggest Christian celebration of the year in Russia.

The tradition of holding Easter services in Moscow's main cathedral started in 2001. This year, all Christians are celebrating the religious holiday on April 16.
