The BHST Chinese Film & TV Overseas Panorama Program - a series of screenings of Chinese films, forums and other cultural exchanges - will be in countries and regions such as the UK, Russia, Italy and Mexico throughout 2017, the program's organizers announced at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

The project is being launched by the Bai Heng Sheng Tian Culture Communication Company with the support of institutions such as the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television and the China Film Archive.

"This will be the first Asian film event ever held in Italy," said Italo Spinelli, founder of the Roman Asia International Film Festival, noting that though Italy has imported some 100 Asian films, distributors still face challenges when it comes to choosing the right films for the market.

Wang Xiaolu, a researcher at the China Film Archive, said that Chinese films currently shown in Europe mainly consist of early works from China's fifth and sixth generation of directors such as Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. However, due to the age of the films they no longer represent the lives of people in China.

As such, Wang stated that one of the program's goals is to introduce more recent works.
