Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a press conference on Monday that China's national security organ is investigating and handling organizations, personnel and activities that endanger China's national security and interests.

Hua's remarks were made in response to questions on the Chinese government's response to a report in The New York Times that CIA operatives had been arrested in China.

Hua said that China's national security authorities are protecting the country's national security and interests, and was acting to "fully perform its duty with the authorization by law."

An article published by The New York Times on Saturday claimed that the Chinese government had systematically dismantled CIA spy operations in China since 2010. The newspaper claimed that some former US officials said that from the final weeks of 2010 through the end of 2012, China had killed at least a dozen of the CIA's sources, and still others were put in jail.

Hua said on Monday that she was "not aware of the details of that report."
