Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a State visit to Kazakhstan from June 7 to 10 and attend the 17th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the foreign ministry announced on Friday.

Xi is invited by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement.

Xi will also attend the opening ceremony of Astana Expo 2017 during the visit, according to the statement.

India and Pakistan will complete the process of joining the SCO during the upcoming summit in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan. Their membership will make the SCO the world's largest regional cooperation organization in terms of population of its members, which will create unprecedented development potential and cooperation, Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quoted as saying at a press conference on May 26 by the Xinhua News Agency.

Wang said that China will take over the SCO rotating presidency after the Astana summit, noting that Beijing is actively making a work plan that covers six major fields, namely politics, economy, security, humanities, foreign relations and mechanism building.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the SCO Charter and the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Long-Term Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation by SCO members, Xinhua said.
