After a performance in Shanghai Sunday, French actress Isabelle Huppert will travel to Beijing's Tianqiao Performing Art Centre where she will read aloud L'amant by French author Marguerite Duras on Wednesday night.

Huppert held a talk with Chinese director Jia Zhangke in Shanghai on Saturday to kick off her China tour, which will also see her travel to Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province.

During the discussion on Saturday, the "queen of French art films" who has starred in more than 100 films remarked on the challenges that live performances bring. She mentioned that when filming, challenges come from within as the audience is only represented by a camera, whereas live performances mean that she just face an audience of thousands.

Huppert also remarked that she actually likes to be on both sides of the line between performer and member of the audience, explaining that she enjoys moving between the four identities of film actor, theater actor, reading performer and a member of the audience.

Isabelle's distinctive voice has helped make her one of the most respected actresses in France. For previous readings, she read from the Marquis de Sade's two seminal texts, Justine and Juliette at the Festival D'avignon in July 2015, winning her a standing ovation from the audience.

At the discussion with Jia, the actress said that the secret to a good reading is to use one's voice to deliver the author's ideas.
