Seven people were killed and 59 injured in a blast near a kindergarten in Fengxian county in East China's Jiangsu Province on Thursday afternoon, China Central Television reported.

Two died on the spot and five others died at a hospital.

The blast happened at around 4:50 pm at the gate of the kindergarten, when children were leaving school, the Xinhua News Agency reported, citing the emergency office of Xuzhou City, which administers Fengxian.

The cause of the blast is unknown. But a witness surnamed Shi told the Global Times that the tragedy was caused by an explosion of a gas cylinder at a roadside stall. The impact of the blast sent people flying by several meters, according to the witness.

Footage posted online showed dozens of people, including children, lying on the ground, some of whom were bleeding.
