A Wuhan woman is left paralyzed from the legs down after a freak accident while practicing yoga at home, media reported.

The 45-year-old woman surnamed Meng underwent surgery on Monday for what doctors diagnosed as a dislocated vertebrae in her neck.

Meng told doctors she had been following along to a yoga instructional video at home on Saturday when, after performing a position that involved raising the head back, she collapsed on the floor.

Meng yelled for her husband who, finding her unable to move her arms and legs, rushed her to hospital.

Though the surgery has helped Meng regain motion in her arms as of Monday, her legs remain paralyzed.

"This is the first time we've had anyone paralyzed from practicing yoga," Meng's doctor, Zhang Weiguo, told the Changjiang Daily.

Zhang said Meng had long suffered from frail vertebrae. In particular, cervical spondylosis, a general age-related wear and tear of the neck's spinal discs.

Zhang is unclear if Meng will regain the use of her legs.

Wang Jingwen, a Wuhan-based yoga instructor, said many of the positions involved are complex and require proper instruction to prevent injury.
