China's ports have seen a strong recovery in throughput this year and the country's efforts to consolidate the ports could help improve efficiency for the industry, a senior analyst from UBS said on Wednesday.

The consolidation efforts could help ports reduce costs and increase capacity utilization, Xu Bin, executive director of Industrials & Infrastructure of China Equity Research with UBS Securities Co, said at a media briefing in Beijing.

Xu noted that container throughput at Chinese ports grew 9 percent year-on-year in the first seven months of 2017, significantly higher than the growth rate of 4 percent in 2016, and some ports saw even faster growth.

For example, the throughput of Yantian port in South China's Guangdong Province saw 16 percent year-on-year throughput growth in July, he pointed out. "This hints at a global recovery, and the trend will go on," Xu said.
