Health officials have been toasting the success of a data-sharing platform involving over 400 hospitals in the city, Wenhui Daily reported on Thursday.

The initiative was set up in 2011 to record the health and medical records of all Shanghai residents under a single platform.

Every day, the database is uploaded with 16 million new entries, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning.

The data-sharing platform allows any doctor in a local public hospital to check a patient's past medical treatment records.

The facility has proved invaluable in allowing hospital staff to better understand patient needs and to make more informed diagnoses.

The initiative was set up to ease the pressure on institutions which used to struggle with keeping track of an increasing number of patients.

Many procedures, such as registration and payments are now carried out online.
