Badminton superstar Lin Dan and Chen Long will have a possible encounter in the men's team final at the 13th Chinese National Games after the duo led Beijing and Fujian teams win their semifinals respectively on Saturday.

Lin, regarded widely as the greatest singles player of all time, is a two-time Olympic and five-time world champion. He has also won the men's singles gold medal for three consecutive times at the National Games, billed as China's mini Olympics and held every four years.

However, Lin never took the men's team gold medal at the Games. Four years ago, he led the People's Liberation Army (PLA) team to claim their first-ever men's team bronze medal at the Games. This time, he joins in Team Beijing and hopes to make a breakthrough.

In the semifinals against Zhejiang, Lin recovered from a first-set loss to beat his national teammate Guo Kai 17-21, 21-19, 21-11. Beijing eventually defeated Zhejiang 3-1 and will face reigning champions Fujian, who sailed past Jiangsu 3-1, in tomorrow's final.

"I will spare no effort in the final because I have never had the chance to enter the final of men's team," said Lin.

"This is my fifth National Games. It has been 20 years. This is also my personal great record. I hope I can fight until the end to make my career more complete."

Rio Olympic men's singles champion Chen Long, representing Fujian, met little resistance from Shi Yuqi of Jiangsu before claiming the victory 21-15, 21-12.

Chen said he expected to play against Lin in the final. This year Chen beat Lin for two consecutive times, including the final of the Asian Badminton Championships.
