"Beijing is my home."

So said Terry Crossman, an American who has been living in Beijing for 22 years. Crossman's Chinese name is Gao Tianrui. Gao came to Beijing in 1995 for work but became friends with his neighbors in his siheyuan, a traditional Chinese courtyard, and decided not to return to the US. "Home is where your stuff is placed," said Gao, "and I have a lot of stuff and many friends in Beijing." Gao recently became an Internet celebrity in China after he signed up to become a volunteer who helps keep public order in Xicheng district, a job which is usually reserved for Chinese senior citizens and requires him to wear a red armband.
