Afghan forces crackdown on a Taliban hideout in Chardara district of Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province left 20 insurgents dead on Tuesday, district governor Zalmai Farooqi said.

"Acting upon intelligence report the unit of Special Forces targeted a Taliban hideout in Sajani Payan locality in Chardara district early today killing 20 rebels on the spot," Farooqi told Xinhua.

Some of those killed in raid were foreign nationals, the official said without identifying their nationalities.

Chardara district, which has been regarded as the main base of Taliban militants in the restive Kunduz province, has been the focal point of government forces since weekend and according to local officials, more than 40 militants have been killed over the past three days.

Taliban militants are yet to make comment on the situation.
