"Now every batch of scallion entering the market has to be examined."

So said a law enforcement officer who examined scallions at the Xinfadi Market in Beijing on September 1. Recently, over one hundred sheep died after eating toxic scallions that were grown in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. A comprehensive investigation launched by the food and drug administration in Beijing showed that the scallions sold in the capital's markets were not from Shenyang. A total of 42 samples of scallions from different markets in Beijing were sent to the food safety monitoring center for testing. The result has not yet come out. So far, the price of scallions has not been affected by the incident. (Source: Beijing Morning Post)
